Roguelands Seeds Company

Operating out of the beautiful Rogue Valley of Southwest Oregon, Roguelands Seeds Company was established in the year 2000 starting on Ebay.com through the sale of exclusive rare tomato seeds to interested gardeners.

During the early 1920's, our ancestor, the late Franz Schutzwohl came to Oregon's Rogue Valley by way from Bohemia and settled a 40 acre homestead where he later grew vegetables for market use (just as his father, Karl Schutzwohl, had in Bohemia years earlier). During the Great Depression, our ancestor provided most locals with their only source for fresh vegetables during those troubling times, established the first 4-H club in our area, started the local school hot lunch program and founded the Josephine Grower's Co-operative (now known as the Grants Pass Grange Co-op which was recently moved back to near the old homestead on Schutzwohl Lane, which is named for our forebear. The Grants Pass Daily Courier ran a nice story to mark the historical significance of the move and interviewed a few members of the family for the article). He also bred the most amazing Jersey Cattle, maintaining the top Jersey herd in the United States Department of Agricultural HIR tests for over 25 years. During the 1950's he was listed in the book "The Who's Who of Oregon State" due to his many accomplishments. Today, our office is located less than one half of a mile from where all this took place over 80 years ago! Some day, we hope to relocate our seed operation back to the original homestead property, which we hope our customers can help us to accomplish through their continued loyalty. We take our company name, "Roguelands", from the name of our ancestor's dairy.  Our family is not only native to the Rogue Valley, but has lived in the same general neighborhood for over five generations.

In the future, we hope to one day also have our seed available in fine garden centers, feedstores and all other fine places that seed is sold worldwide!

Come grow with us!

Rostova Tomatoes or Sunset's Red Horizon Tomatoes
Rostova Tomatoes or Sunset's Red Horizon Tomatoes
Introduced exclusively by Roguelands Seeds Company in 2001
Our company goal is to seek out, breed and offer to our many customers, the highest quality, old fashioned, non-hybrid, non-genetically modified and rarest heirloom vegetable seeds available throughout the world. In this capacity we have excelled, in that we have went through great pains and expense to import many rare and exciting vegetable varieties.

In 2001, we were fortunate enough to introduce a brand new heirloom tomato variety to the world. The original seed had been brought to Oregon by a Russian immigrant by the name of Nik Peplenov who had moved to Portland, Oregon from the city of Rostov in Southern Russia in 1998. Having been fortunate enough to aquire some of the original seed and having grown it for a few years, we later introduced this fantastic Russian tomato to the public under the name of Rostova, after its city of origin. In 2003, working in conjunction with Tomatofest and Sunset Magazine of California, the tomato was re-released by Tomatofest under the name "Sunset's Red Horizon". The Rostova or Sunset's Red Horizon epitomizes everything we look for in an old fashioned tomato, being a prolific and early indeterminate producer of first class red tomatoes of large size. The Rostova (Sunset's Red Horizon), like many other Russian tomatoes, produces both beefsteak and oxheart shaped tomatoes of an enormous size and is blessed with an enormous size, excellent taste, thick flesh and it excels in cool climates.

Nicholaevna Pink Tomato
Introduced exclusively by Roguelands Seeds Company in 2001
Along with the Rostova, in 2001, we also introduced five other very rare tomatoes which we had imported from the Russian Federation a few years prior. These included the Vasielev Green, the Orlov Yellow, the Nicholaevna Pink, Kazkh Schalavije and the Tobolsk. As you can see in the above photographs of the first three named varieties, these are very fine Russian varieties that can add a great beauty to your garden. All five proved to be extremely popular with our customers and are much in demand.
Following the introduction of the above Russian Tomato varieties, in 2003 we were very proud to introduce two very fine Bell Pepper varieties, in the guise of the Roguelands Bell Pepper and also a golden-yellow variation that we named the Roguelands Yellow Bell Pepper

Highland Lass Cherry Tomato

Scheduled to be introduced by Roguelands Seeds Company in 2009

In 2007, we hope to also introduce our first introduction of our own exclusive breeding in the guise of a brand new cherry tomato we call "Highland Lass" which was developed during the time we spent on the north east coast of Scotland. The Highland Lass tomato is a very fine, very small fruited cherry tomato that sets its fruit even in Scotland's very bitter climate. This new cherry tomato variety descended in part from the famous British tomato variety "Moneymaker" and has been cultivated purely for the last three years without any variation in leaf-type, fruit size, fruit color or other features. Highland Lass is very hardy and resists even very cool temperatures with high winds and thick fogs, having been trialed strictly on an outdoor basis in Scotland's brutal climate with no assistance of cover.

Our Seeds

We take our seeds seriously and the greatest care goes into the production, packaging and shipping of our seeds. Currently, all of our seeds are packaged in re-sealable polythene bags with paper labels noting the variety, though we are hoping to upgrade into more advanced packaging in the near future. All of the seed we offer is 100% open pollinated, meaning that it is purebred seed and is the exact opposite of hybrid seeds in that it will reproduce purebred seed which can be saved year after year. In addition to collecting our own seeds, due to the constraints of space, staff, funding and time, we also procure seed from select industry sources so that we are able to offer a more complete inventory to our customers.

The greatest absolute attention is paid to the quality, freshness and purity of the seed we offer to our customers. Just as when we started, we still select all of our seed by hand and take great care to discard deformed or damaged seed from our packets.

International Shipping

Though we do ship vegetable seeds to most points of the world, there is a growing list of countries that we cannot ship seeds to. As seed is a "live product", it is subject to numerous government regulations in most countries and as time goes on, it is becoming more and more difficult to ship seed overseas. That said, we can no longer ship vegetable seeds to the following countries:

Australia & New Zealand - Both countries have established almost a total ban on all vegetable seed imports. For those of you "Down Under", we recommend ordering seed from Diggers Club.

France & Austria - In recent months, French and Austrian Customs have become particularly heavy handed about stopping shipments of seed entering their respective countries, despite the fact that other members of the European Union are not restrictive. French & Austrian customs are suggested to visit: Magic Garden Seeds of Germany or Real Seeds in Wales.

Japan - Japan has recently adopted new seed regulations, restricting seed importations.

Iraq - Under Order 81, established by the occupational military government, a literal war has been declared on Iraqi agriculture, starting with the looting and eventual burning of their national seed bank and moving on to banning farmers from growing and saving their own seeds. Unfortunately for Iraq, the entire seed market there has been placed firmly into the hands of the big GM Seed Companies like Monsanto, Syngenta, Bayer Crop Sciences who have managed to block other companies from shipping seed into Iraq.

Iran, Libya, North Korea & Cuba - Due to current world politics, we cannot ship seed to these countries as the United States government has placed total bans on shipping just about anything. Sorry, we're just not allowed to do it.

Bulk Seeds

We do at most times of the year have access to an extensive selection of not only bulk tomato seeds, but also bulk and wholesale vegetable seeds, bulk herb seeds and bulk quantities of flower seeds of many types. Due to the fact that bulk tomato seed can be literally "here today, gone tommorrow", we are not currently listing bulk tomato seeds or other bulk seeds on the site in a shopping cart format due to the fact that some seed is very limited in quantities. With this in mind, bulk is often available for almost every type of seed we have on the site and the method to secure the seed is to simply request a quote via e-mail. Please be sure to include your location. There is often a two to four week lead time on all bulk seed orders.

- Update -

Due to industry wide seed shortages, we are no longer supplying bulk seed.

Please read an additional note on bulk seeds here prior to requesting a quote.

Our Customers

At Roguelands Seeds Company, we cater to a broad range of customers. While most of our customers are backyard garden enthusiasts, we can also count many small market growers, farmers and seed companies amongst our customers, as well as corporations working in the seed and food industry.

Distribution of Seeds

Currently, we are seeking partners for the retail distribution of our seeds and can offer very competetive terms for potential distributors. If you own a garden center, feedstore, store or even a website and would like to stock our seeds for your customers, please do not hesitate to contact us! As well, if you are a fan of our seeds and would like to buy our seed from your local seed seller, please ask them to contact us about stocking our seeds! An information packet is available for customers to hand out to local seed sellers on request.

Regarding Charities

We do on many ocassions often give excess quantities of seeds to charities of all types, which in the past has included seed for school science projects, for research at universities, seeds for public garden projects, seeds for third world food and farming programs and ocassionally also to individuals who are very much down on their luck, but brave enough to ask. If you are a representative of a charity (it need not be tax deductable) and are seeking seed for a project, please do not hesitate to contact us about your needs.

Some of the charities we've supported with seed donations are:

Girl Scouts of America Troop 1391 (Alexandria, VA)
Kids In the Valley, Adventuring! (Roanake, VA)
OSU 21st Century Afterschool Program (Lincoln County, OR)

If You Honestly Cannot Afford Seeds

Our main goal in doing "what we do" is to encourage the average person to attain some semblence of self-reliance and to spread old fashioned heirloom seeds through the world. Unlike a lot of other seed companies, we are not owned by a big global corporation and our bottom line is not the Almighty Dollar

As little as eighty years ago, over 75% of the population of the United States lived on the small family farm and grew the majority of their own food. Today, that number is less than 5%! In the meantime, the production of food has fallen into the hands of a handful of global corporations, who have been proven time and time again to show very little regard for the welfare of the public at large. In addition to cutting corners on quality, contrary to the knowledge of the majority, these big companies have introduced genetically modified foods into our food chain and have little concern for the nutritional and health needs of their customers. In the United States today, over 80% of all processed foods contain GM products. Meanwhile, even if one lives strictly on fruit and vegetables, few realize that the procuce they buy is loaded with toxic chemicals, is not as nutritious as it should be (nutritional values of commercial vegetables have been dropping dramatically since the 1950's) and we don't have to tell you that the safety of these vegetables leaves a lot to be desired, as easily attested to by recent salmonella scares in a number of commercial produce crops. Even if you think you are eating a healthy, natural diet, the chances are pretty high that you are really not eating a good diet and we can say without a doubt, that if you suffer from health issues or basic aches and pains, that most of your problems stem back to what you eat.

If you want to learn more about these topics, we really recommend the following books and films:

Dr. Gillian McKeith's "You Are What You Eat"
Jeffery Smith's "Seeds of Deception"
Marion Nestle's "Food Politics: How The Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health"
"The GMO Trilogy" (DVD and audio)

The bottom line is, the companies that produce the food, really don't care about the health of the people who eat their product. They just want your money.

But it really does not have to be this way. Even if you don't have a lot of space for a garden, you can grow your own wholesome food and even if it's only a small fraction of your diet, every little bit counts. Considering the present economic situation that is going on today, learning to grow your own food and to save your own vegetable seeds, may very well mean the difference between really struggling and having some real security for your family.

That said, if you cannot honestly afford to buy our seed, please don't hesitate to push your pride away for a moment, tell us a bit about your situation, how much space you have and to ask us for some seeds and some advice on how to gain a little bit of food security. (Note: Keep in mind that it costs us money to ship seed and that people who abuse this policy just to get something for nothing could endanger our ability to provide seed for the people who really need do need them in the future).

Our Guarentee

We guarentee all the individual small seed packets listed in our catalogues to the extent of the purchase price at the time of sale. Though seed is a "live product" and there are many factors which can come into play, if you are ever dis-satisfied with the germination of our seeds, we will gladly refund your money with no questions asked (or) provide a replacement (or) issue you a store credit equaling the same value of your purchase in question, anytime within one year of the purchase date at our discretion. This guarrantee is non-transferable to other parties and does not apply to bulk seeds or seed in customized packets. (see below)

Any recommendations we make in our catalogue or list upon our website(s) are compiled from recognized horticultural resources available to us. Though the greatest care is taken to provide sound advice on gardening, Roguelands Seeds Company is not responsible for any damages caused by any recommendations or advice given by staff members of Roguelands Vegetable Seed Company. Any references to the medicinal properties or poisonous properties of certain seeds or plants is intended for historical and informational purposes only and in no way should be construed as being a prescription for medical ailments or other uses.

The plant variety descriptions listed in our catalogue and website(s) are prepared from personal observations and research from available reliable sources. Any illustrated examples of plant varieties have been grown under favourable conditions with expert care, but do not necessarily predict what can be expected under other conditions in different hands. Variations from the colors that appear in photographs can sometimes be expected, which can result not only from computer display and printing differences, but also differences in soil and climate. Though we do our best to properly depict and describe varieties, your results may vary based on your climate, soil, location, growing methods, time of harvest and other factors. With this in mind, photos and descriptions are meant as a general guideline only and some variation can be expected.

Please note that ALL sales of bulk seeds and customized packet seeds are final. As most bulk seed is obtained through outside sources, we are unable to accept returns for any reason and can only use our best judgement in obtaining seed from our most reliable sources. In addition, we do not accept returns of any customized packets. As there is a lead time of two to four weeks after receipt of payment for both bulk and customized seed packets, we also do not accept cancellations of any order after a five day period after the invoice has been sent.

In placing an order, you agree that you understand the above terms.
