The Purple Queen Bean is exceptionally hardy, very disease resistant and are easy to grow. This wonderful bean variety is ideal for northern climates as it has no problem germinating in cool, wet soil. Purple Queen is an exceptional producer! Use Purple Queen Beans either cooked as snap green beans or alternatively raw in salads. Purple Queen Beans are resistant to bean beetles and tolerates BCMV. Blue Lake Bush Bean (Blue Lake #274 Bean) Origin: USA Item #: BUSHBEAN002 The Blue Lake Bush Bush Bean (also known as the Blue Lake #274 Bean) is a bush version of the famous Blue Lake Pole Bean that is hands down, historically, the best Pole Bean ever offered anywhere in the world. Having originally been introduced by the Asgrow Company in 1962, Blue Lake #274 combined the great flavor and production of the original Blue Lake Bean on an easy to manage, upright bush-type plant of 15 to 18 inches in height. There has been no looking back ever since, for the Blue Lake Bush Bean (or Blue Lake #274 Bean) quickly became the most widely grown bush bean variety in the United States and has remained so for over 35 years! The Blue Lake Bush Bean (or Blue Lake #274 Bean) features a lush, green upright bush type plant that produces an abundance of old fashioned 5 to 5.5 inch long green, stringless pods. The pods possess an exceptional, sweet flavor like green beans are meant to have. When cooked, the meaty, white seeded bean pods retain their firmness. Unlike other bush bean varieties, Blue Lake Bush Beans retain their tenderness over a long period. If harvested regularly, the Blue Lake Bush Bean will continue to yield a heavy crop over the entire season. This wonderful bush bean variety is a must for every garden and is resistant to Bean Mosaic virus and adapts to a wide range of climates. Although this variety, like all other bush beans are best used fresh, the "green beans" of this variety are exceptional for storage, either canned or frozen. In fact, this variety was once the dominant canning bean on the market! Matures in 50 to 60 days. Blue Lake Pole Bean Origin: USA Item #: POLEBEAN001 For many years, the Blue Lake Pole Bean has been considered the STANDARD for all pole green bean varieties. In fact, in the early part of the 20th century, the Blue Lake Pole Bean was the only bean grown for canning purposes in the Blue Lake area near Ukiah, California where it was developed. In 1923, this wonderful pole bean variety arrived in Oregon, which at that time, was the heart of bean research and bean production in the United States. According to the late James A. Baggett of OSU (who contributed so much to the world of horticulture during his tenure at OSU as a vegetable researcher and variety developer), by the 1950's, over 10,000 acres of Blue Lake Pole Beans were being grown in Western Oregon. As a result of the cultivation of this variety, Oregon's Willamette Valley in the north west part of our state, became famous around the world for their hand-picked beans. Prior to this era, Blue Lake Beans were often stringy and many had colored seeds, but with its popularity in Western Oregon, it became much improved into the Blue Lake Beans we know and love today. Currently, most strains of Blue Lake Pole Beans trace back to the breeding efforts of the Ferry-Morse Company during the 1950's. Today, despite its origin as a humble canning variety, Blue Lake Pole Beans are now widely recognized as a gourmet bean variety! Fine produce sellers and grocers who are in "the know" often advertise them as "Blue Lake Beans" opposed to selling them as simple "Green Beans", while immature pods of this great old variety are sold as "Baby Blue Lake Beans", which illustrate that even the non-gardening general public recognize this variety as the best green bean on the market. In fact, despite the many new bean offerings by countless seed houses throughout the world, the Blue Lake Bean continues to more than hold its own against the new-fangled varieties created through scientific breeding and genetic modification! In a recent taste-test performed by Sunset Magazine, 5 out of 6 tasters preferred Blue Lake to the other varieties tested. Blue Lake Pole Bean produces a heavy crop of delicious, tender, tasty green beans that reach 6 to 7 inches in length. Unlike Runner Beans, this lovely bean variety does not require the presence of bees for pollination. The jade green colored pods are ideal for canning or freezing, are stringless and are high in Vitamins A, B and C. Some form of support is necessary to grow this wonderous bean variety as the vines will reach 7 feet in height. Matures in 55 to 65 days.. Christmas Pole Lima Bean (Calico Lima Bean) Origin: USA Item #: LIMABEAN001 The Christmas Pole Lima Bean, once also known as the Calico Lima Bean is an ancient variety of climbing Lima Bean renowned for its fantastic color. This wonderful and hard to find Lima Bean was originally introduced to the United States in 1840 and has been with is ever since. The Christmas Pole Lima is a long season lima bean which is grown primarily for its beautiful seeds which are a light cream color that is variegated in a deep maroon. The plants of this variety are very evasive growers and will reach heights of well over 10 feet, hence supports are very much a necessity. The plants produce an abundance of 4 to 6 inch long bean pods which each contain 4 or 5 of the colored lima beans. The beans can be used either shelled or dry and turn a pink-brown color when cooked. Their taste is characteristic of other Lima Beans; a buttery, rich flavor which is somewhat more mild than other lima bean varieties. Mature in 85 to 90 days. Henderson's Bush Lima Bean (Henderson's Baby Lima Bean) Origin: USA Item #: LIMABEAN002 Henderson's Bush Lima Bean (also known as "Henderson's Dwarf Lima Bean", "Earliest Bush Lima Bean" and "Henderson's Baby Lima Bean" was first introduced by the Peter Henderson Seed Company in 1888. Two somewhat different legends surround the origin of this wonderful lima bean variety. According to one legend, this bean was found growing wild along a fence on a Virginia roadside by a soldier returning home from the American Civil War in 1865. The second, more detailed legend, states that the bean variety was actually growing along side a Virginia roadside in 1885 by a common laborer. The laborer then sold the seeds he collected from the lima bean variety to T.W. Woods & Son's Company of Richmond, Virginia, who in turn sold the bean stock to Peter Henderson. What is known for fact is that Henderson was responsible for introducing the variety to the public three years later in 1888. Henderson's Bush Lima Bean is the old fashioned standard for lima or wax beans in the United States and will still give any modern lima bean variety a great run for its money nearly 120 years later. This old fashioned bean variety is ideal for canning, freezing and drying, which make it ideal all around. This lovely variety features tall, bushy plants which are reliable and early producers and will provide enormous yields of lima beans right up until the first frost. Bush lima beans are very easy to cultivate and this variety will produce a great crop of small, flat, slightly curved, bean pods which contain 3 to 4 plump, buttery flavored lima beans that will dry to an ivory white in color. This variety produces earlier
than most bean varieties, providing a fine harvest within 60 to 65 days.
This great lima bean is drought tolerant and is extremely suitable for
the American South.
King of the Garden Pole Lima Bean Origin: USA Item #: LIMABEAN007 The King of the Garden Pole Lima is an old fashioned, heirloom lima bean that was first introduced in 1883 and has remained very popular ever since. This variety is a very good climber and reaches heights of up to eight feet. Supports of some type, are therefore a necessity, but the extra work of erecting poles or other supports saves precious space in the garden and a great number of plants can be grown in a smaller space than required for the same number of bush varieties. The fast growing vines are very productive and give a very high yield of dark green, 8 inch long pods. Each pod contains four to six large creamy-yellow colored lima beans. The beans are very plump and possess a fine buttery taste. One of the best choices for using dried. Matures in 70 to 75 days.
Dark Red Kidney Bean Origin: USA Item #: DRYBEAN001 The Dark Red Kidney Bean is the famous dry bean that is used in Chili Con Carne and various other well known dishes. This variety is also known as the Red Bean, which sometimes causes confusion between it and the Adzuki Bean. The Red Kidney is a medium sized variety of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and features a dark red shell with a cream colored flesh. Its popularity can be attributed to its excellent flavor and many uses. Dark Red Kidney Beans are a bush variety which are produced on a sturdy plant which yields an abundance of hearty pods that contain five large red, kidney shaped beans. Kidney Beans may be dried or canned, but either way, great care must be taken to boil Kidney Beans for at least 10 minutes before consuming them. Kidney Beans contain a toxic compund called lectin phytohaemagglutinin which can cause severe stomach upset if the beans are eaten raw. Boiling degrades this compound. Matures in 95 days.
