Detroit Dark Red is one of the many lines of beets which were bred down from a variety called Detroit Globe that was introduced in 1892 by D.M. Ferry. Other related breeding lines include Detroit Short Top, Detroit Globe, Crimson Globe, Crimson Ball, Crimson King and Ruby Ball. Detroit Globe itself was bred down from a variety described as an early maturing "European Blood Turnip". Detroit beets are one of the most popular varieties of beetroot grown not only commercially, but also in home gardens. It is an excellent maincrop beet suited for northern climates whose mature roots store very well. Its tops are short and thick growing with dark red veins and can be utilized as greens when young. The roots are globe shaped, symettrical and smooth skinned. As they can reach a large size, this variety is very popular with exhibition growers. The roots are a bright purple-red when cooked and possess a fine, sweet flavor. In addition to fresh market use, the variety is also widely used for canning and pickling. Moderately tolerant of Cercospora
leaf spot and downy mildew. Recommended for containers. 55 to 60 days.

to peel. Very productive. The tops are edible and may be prepared like
