After Chamber's death, W. Atlas Burpee was able to procure some of the last seed. E.L. Coy sold two quarts of seeds to Burpee in 1900 and told Burpee that he now owned "the very sweetest and richest corn ever known". Bupee's formally introduced this variety to the public in 1902. Since that time, Golden Bantam Corn has become the popular favorite with gardeners worldwide!   This is a traditional and very popular yellow sweet corn that is ideal for corn on the cob. Stowell's Evergreen Sweet Corn
Origin: United States
Item #: SWEETCORN002

Stowell's Evergreen Sweet Corn was originally developed by Nathaniel Newman Stowell of Burlington, New Jersey in 1848. Stowell was born on May 16th, 1783 in Temnple, New Hampshire to John Stowell and Mary (Remington) Stowell. Stowell was a gardener by profession and spent some years refining this variety, which he developed by crossing Menomony Soft Corn and Northern Sugar Corn together. In 1855, Nathan Stowell sold two ears of seed corn to a close friend for what was then, a good price of four dollars, on the agreement that the seed was for personal use only. Stowell's "friend" then proceeded to re-sell the same seed for a whopping $20,000 to Thoburn and Company who released the variety commercially in late 1856.

Nathan Stowell never saw a penny of the money that was earned from his corn variety and four short years later, it is reported in the 1860 census of Burlington, NJ that Nathan Stowell and his wife Rachel (then respectively, 77 and 76 years of age) had to their name, land worth an estimated $800 and an estate worth $300. 10 years later, in 1870, and now at 87 years of age and still working as a gardener, Stowell's property value had dropped to only $500 and his estate to a very meager $100, indicating that he was then bordering on near poverty, despite the fact that by this time, his corn breeding skills had made many rich men, even wealthier. By 1880, he was in the care of one of his eleven children, Charles C. Stowell (born 8th May 1824) and then died the following year on August 31st, 1881 at the ripe old age of 98 years - a tremendous age in those days.

This delicious sweet corn is regarded as the "King of All White Sweet Corn Varieties", has been popular for over 150 years and matures in 90 days. The variety matures slowly over a long period, extending the usual harvest and produces 9 inch ears with 16 to 20 rows of plump, sweet white kernals.

Even after all these years, Stowell's Evergreen Sweet Corn is the best tasting white sweet corn available on the market today.
