At
this time, we have now ceased offering individual packets of vegetable
seeds with the exception of our famous heirloom tomato seeds. Due to the
current state of the economy, we are finding that the majority of our customers
are asking for sets of seeds that will allow them to grow enough vegetables
to help reduce the cost of groceries. We are now focusing on offering sets
of vegetable seeds to our customers at an affordable price that will allow
them to grow their own food. These sets of seeds are
also very storable and can be used over the course of several growing seasons.
Not only are these sets a great value in price compared to buying individual
packets of seeds, but the produce they will yield for you will give you
an even greater savings off your grocery bill. With this in mind,
at this time, we will no longer be offering individual packets of vegetable
seeds for individual sale with the exception of our heirloom tomatoes.
You can however, still browse through our seed pages to see what kind of
seeds we offer in our sets.

Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce
Henderson's Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce posesses one of the best documented histories among all lettuce varieties. This wonderful loose-leaf type lettuce has been favored by gardeners and seedsmen for over 150 years now and presumeably, the Simpson name in lettuce has existed since the period of 1700. There are many types of "Simpson" lettuce which have been cultivated and they are all most certainly related, although the facts about its actual origin and developer remain somewhat foggy at best. According to one source, the variety is descendent of Early Curled Simpson Lettuce which was introduced by a Mr. A. Simpson of New York in 1864. What is known for fact is that this variety was introduced commercially by the Peter Henderson Seed Co. in 1880 and further that Henderson described the variety in his book "Gardening for Profit : A Guide to the Successful Cultivation of the Market and Family Garden" in 1867. For that reason, Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce is quite often known as "Henderson's Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce". This wonderful variety produces large, compact leaf-type lettuce with light green, curled leaves. The variety provides a yield very early and is a very dependable and productive variety that bolts slowly. Matures in only 45 days! Henderson's Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce is one of the best cold climate lettuces on the market. During the winter of 2003-2004, we had a bed of Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce seedlings survive a severe cold snap. Temperatures dropped to -5 degrees and we received 5 to 6 inches of snow in one night that remained on the ground for 4 days. Trapped beneath a layer of ice and snow, our Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce survived the ordeal! In our 2004 trial tests, our Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce also performed exceptionally well in grow bags, in poor soil, in soggy soil and in a very shady spot. With that in mind, we will guarentee our seed of this lettuce variety to excell in the worst of climates!
