Green Sausage Tomato (aka. Green Sleeves) Origin: Unknown Item #: TOM039 During 2004, the Green Sausage Tomato was the latest rage among tomato enthusiasts. Currently, no other sources list anything regarding this variety's history and typically regard it as a European Heirloom since it was first known in Europe and then later in the United States. However, this variety is actually an American tomato developed by tomato breeder Tom Wagner, who also originated the famous Green Zebra tomato, the Green Grape tomatoes and many others. It is interesting to note that the popular name of "Green Sausage" is not correct and that Tom Wagner had actually named this variety "Green Sleeves". According to Wagner (pers. com), this variety was developed from: "PI 205046, some hanging
basket lines, and my Green Nails variety. Green Nails is a robust indeterminate
In 1996, Wagner put on a demonstration of his breeding work in Holland and this variety was deemed by attendees from the European seed industry to be their favorite. One attending seed company procured seed of the variety and later introduced it under the name "Green Sausage" without Wagner's permission. This unusual tomato variety is somewhat sausage shaped with a pointed end much like many other paste tomatoes, but where it is truly unique is in its color. Typically, paste tomatoes are red, but Green Sausage / Green Sleeves is a wonderful lime green color with distinct yellow stripes! The variety is extremely ornamental and is certainly the type of tomato to raise if your intention is to stun your guests and neighbors or perhaps your market customers as it is simply a one of a kind tomato variety. When sliced, the interior of the tomatoes are green and are somewhat reminescent of a kiwi. Possesses a good taste - so far as paste tomatoes go. Sets its tomatoes in large trusses of 6 to 8 tomatoes at once on a short, bush type plant. Determinate. Matures in 75 to 80 days.
