Giant Belgian Pink Tomato
Origin: USA
Item #: TOM011

According to one source, the Giant Belgian Tomato was first discovered by a German immigrant named Albert Behnke who entered the nursery business at Beltsville, Maryland in the 1930's. Through Behnke, this tomato of an undocumented origin soon spread like a wildfire throughout the Eastern United States in the 1950's, with many of Behnke's customers driving for many hours to pick up their Giant Belgian Tomato plants. Reportedly, from here, the tomato also found its way into the catalogue of Gleckler's Seed Co. of Ohio in the 1950's, but there seems to be debate as to whether it was Behnke or Gleckler who had the variety first.

Giant Belgian is an exceptional producer of huge, dark pink tomatoes that feature an exquisite sweet taste. The tomatoes are very large, averaging 1.5 to 2 pounds, with some sources also reporting tomatoes of this variety from 3 to 5 pounds on rare ocassions. Giant Belgian is one of our largest tomato varieties and one of our most recommended. Indeterminate. Matures in about 80-90 days

The Dutchman Tomato
Origin: United States
Item #: TOM077

The Dutchman Tomato is an extremely old variety of tomato that dates back to at least the 1920's and was ocassionally known under the German name "der Dutchman". By World War Two, the variety had all but disappearted and was maintained only by a single family of gardeners. Fortunately, in 1958, Gleckers Seeds, which was one of the earliest rare seed dealers was able to obtain and reintroduce the variety. Their 1958 catalog states:

"Here is an extremely old, large fruited pink-skinned tomato. It is practically extinct as far as securing seed. In fact it is doubtful if seed has ever been sold by any seedsmen. Only by handing down by generations of one family has this tomato existed."

This wonderful heirloom tomato is similar to Giant Belgian and is a producer of huge, solid tomatoes of a purple pink color with a sweet flavor. The tomatoes are extremely dense, have few seeds and often weigh up to three pounds or more!

Indeterminate. 80 days.

Radiator Charlie's Mortgage Lifter Tomato Seeds
Radiator Charlie's Mortgage Lifter Tomato
Origin: Logan, West Virginia, United States
Item #: TOM078

Radiator Charlie's Mortgage Lifter Tomato is a 1940's non-commercial tomato breeding development of a Mr. Marshall Cletis Byles of Logan, West Virginia. Naturally, Byles didn't much appreciate his given name, so he was known locally simply as "Radiator Charlie" as he operated a small auto repair shop at the base of a steep hill that was notorious for making trucks overheat. Naturally he did pretty well for himself by having a regular line of customers in need of radiator repair work due to the hill. M.C. Byles gained an interest in gardening after he began working in the cotton fields of North Carolina at the tender age of four years old to help his family make ends meet. As a result of working hard through his childhood, Mr. Byles had no formal education or actual plant breeding experience, yet he would go on to create a most remarkable variety of tomato that would carry his name.

Sometime during the early 1940's, Radiator Charlie decided that he wanted to develop a very large tomato, so he set about trying to locate the largest tomatoes that he could find. He soon located four varieties of very large tomatoes: German Johnson Pink, Red Beefsteak, an unknown Italian variety and an unknown English variety. From these, he grew ten plants which he cultivated in a very unorthodox, very unique fashion. He planted nine of the plants in a circle and then planted a German Johnson Pink in the center of the circle. Byles then cross pollinated the German Johnson's flowers with pollen from each of the nine plants in the circle and saved seed from the resulting tomatoes. The next year, he planted the seeds and selected the best seedlings. The very best of these again went to the center of a circle, while the remaining were planted in a circle around them. Again, the plants in the middle were hand pollinated with pollen from those in the circle. Byles repeated this process for the next six years until he had created a stable variety that met his needs. After that, he never had another type of tomato on his place. The resulting variety became known as the Radiator Charlie's Tomato and soon established themselves as being very desireable. Every spring, gardeners from as far away as 200 miles came to buy their tomato seedlings from Radiator Charlie, which he sold for one dollar each, which was a substantial amount of money for a tomato plant back then. Mr. Byles sold so many tomato plants of his new variety over the next five or six years that the profits of his tomato enterprise paid off the $6000 mortgage on his home!

After that, the tomato variety became forever known as Radiator Charlie's Mortgage Lifter Tomato! In 1985, Mr. Byles shared some of his seed with the Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, who formerly introduced it to the general public. Ever since then, it has been a very desireable tomato variety.

Radiator Charlie's Mortgage Lifter Tomato can average 2 and a half pounds per tomato, but tomatoes weighing over four pounds are regularly produced. The tomatoes are of a slightly flattened beefsteak type, have a very thick flesh with few seeds and is a brilliant pink red in color.

Radiator Charlie's Mortgage Lifter Tomato is a wonderful producer and is very disease resistant.

Omar's Lebanese Tomato
Origin: Lebanon
Item #: TOM079

Omar's Lebanese Tomato is a rare beefsteak tomato that was considered the best of heirloom tomato authority Carolyn Male's 1995 tomato trials. Originally secured from a Lebanese college student, the variety is said to have been obtained from a farmer living in Lebanon's hill country. This huge pink beefsteak is truly impressive, typically weighing as much as three to four pounds. Apart from its huge size, it is an exceptionally sweet tasting variety due to a high sugar content, which seems to improve in northern climates. Disease resistant. Indeterminate. 80 days.
