Sunset's Red Horizon Tomato Origin: United States Item #: TOM092 In 2001, we introduced our famous Rostova Tomato to gardeners worldwide. On Ebay.com, prices as high $50 per packet were paid for Rostova seed by tomato enthusiasts who knew an excellent tomato when they saw one. In 2003, in conjunction with Sunset Magazine, Tomatofest of California re-introduced this variety (with our blessing) under the name Sunset's Red Horizon. The variety received loads of national press and became very much in demand. In 2005, we were able to trial seed bred down from Tomatofest offerings and were immediately struck by the fact that the resulting plants and tomatoes were not identical to the original Rostova variety. Though they had many of the excellent qualities of the original, the fruits were somewhat smaller, tended to be more heart-shaped and there was also more of a tendency toward a more upright, strurdier vine. The tomatoes were also faster maturing. Starting in late 2005, we split the variety into two breeding programs - Rostova Extra Special Selection (which were bred down exclusively from the few remnants of the original imported seed collected in Russia in 1999) and Sunset's Red Horizon (exclusively down from Tomatofest stock). Our intention is to eventually offer Sunset's Red Horizon and Rostova Extra Special Selection side by side. (Note: Rostova Extra Special Selection is due to be available again in the Fall of 2007). Sunset's Red Horizon is an excellent red-pink variety of an old fashioned Oxheart shape that is borne on sturdy, disease resistant vines. The fruits are medium sized and are incredibly dense, thick meated and possess an honest old fashioned tomato taste that beats store bought tomatoes hands down. Highly recommended for cool and wet northern climates. 80 days.

Roma Tomato Origin: United States Item #: TOM013 Roma is an outstanding and disease resistant tomato variety that produces oblong red, plum-like tomatoes of a medium size. Roma is ideal for making tomato paste or for canning. There seems to be some debate about this tomato variety's origin. Though it is typically assumed to be an Italian heirloom tomato, in their 1958 annual catalogue, Geckler Seeds Company states that the Roma is: "A very important new tomato development at the Plant Industry Station, Beltsville, Maryland. Final selection came from the progenies of crosses of San Marzano, Pan American and Red Top. Vine and fruit characteristics resemble Red Top, but much more productive and larger than San Marzano." In
the years since, this tomato variety has become one of the best known tomatoes
in the United States and is popular among gardeners as well as commercial
growers due to it's fine taste, meaty flesh and resistance against Fusarium
and Verticulum Wilt. Determinate. Matures early - 65 to 70 days. Roma is
a very popular tomato and not at all rare, but it is one of our personal
favorites!

Abraham Lincoln Tomato Origin: United States Item #: TOM057 The Abraham Lincoln Tomato was originally released in 1923 by the H.W. Buckbee Seed Company of Rockford, Illinois. Eventually this tomato variety became associated with the R.H. Shumway Seed Company. The Shumway Seed Company described this tomato as a solid fleshed, dark red tomato with a good tomato flavor. The Tomatoes ranged in size from about one pound, but tomatoes up to three pounds were reported among Abraham Lincoln Tomatoes. The vigorous indeterminate vines often produce up until the time of the first frost and the tomatoes ripen about 90 days after transplant. Abraham Lincoln Tomatoes are regular tomato leafed and prefer full sun to partial shade. Abraham Lincoln Tomatoes are among the favorites of many seed savers and should not be confused with the Tomato variety known as "Abe Lincoln", which is not the same variety.

Bonny Best Tomato (aka. Bonnie Best Tomato, Bonny's Best Tomato) Origin: United States Item #: TOM058 The Bonny Best Tomato, which is also known under the name Bonny's Best Tomato and Bonnie Best Tomato, was introduced to the public in 1908. Depending on which tomato history resources you prefer to trust, Bonny Best was either developed at the Bonny Plant Farm of Union Springs, Alabama or by a breeder in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. This old fashioned canning tomato variety is one of our favorites and is becoming harder and harder to find despite the fact that the variety was once carried by nearly every seed seller in the United States. With its rich, true tomato taste, and an even richer history, Bonny Best is one of the best tomatoes for your garden! Stark, 1924, says that Bonny Best is an: "intense
flaming scarlet in color ... (The) flesh solid, meaty, slightly acid and
of splendid table quality…one of the best main crop varieties…colors clear
to the stem, does not crack, has few seeds, no green core and ripens easily;
is borne in clusters of about three to five, is round, somewhat flattened,
and smooth and attractive on the bush and in the crate.”
Burpee, writing in their 1926 annual says that Bonny Best is: "A
selection of Chalk's Early Jewel, maturing about a week earlier. The purplish-pink
fruits are borne in clusters of 3 to 5. They are somewhat smaller than
Chalk's Early Jewel, single fruits weighing 5 ounces each. They are smooth,
solid, meaty, juicy, and in every way very uniform."
Briggs of Edmonton, Canada described it in 1929 as being: "of
compact growth, the plants are fairly loaded with fruit. The large handsome
uniform fruits are very solid and deep, being almost round, have few seeds
and are of fine sweet flavor. Color, bright scarlet, ripening right up
to the stem without any cracks or green core; skin thin but sufficiently
strong to make it a good shipper. It is a shade later than Earliana."
Buist of Philadelphia, notes in 1946, that "Bonnie Best" is: "A standard early variety following Earliana in ripening. One of the best all purpose tomatoes valuable for the early market, home gardens and forcing under glass. Yields well all season. Vine medium growth. Fruit bright scarlet, medium size, quite round, smooth, solid and of excellent quality." Bonnie Best is still one of the best tomatoes after nearly a century in cultivation! Indeterminate. Matures in 75 days.

The name "Riesentraube" literally means "giant grape", but what is meant is actually "Giant Bunch of Grapes" as this wonderful old variety produces huge clusters of scarlet red, one ounce grape tomatoes. The plants are very large and produce huge yields of these richly flavored tomatoes. The variety is extremely popular among tomato collectors as it possesses the full tomato flavor that is missing in so many modern cherry tomatoes. Highly recommended!.

Czech Stupice Tomato Origin: Czech Republic Item #: TOM089 An outstanding tomato variety hailing from the Moravia in the Czech Repulic. Among all the Tomatoes bearing an origin to the former Czecho-Slovakia, this variety is the best known. A very early and very heavy producer of small red fruits, and in addition has a high cold tolerance. In addition to its excellent production ability, there are not many Tomatoes that offer an equal taste to this variety. Stupice yield fruit that are not just sweet to the taste, but they taste like Tomatoes are meant to taste! The Stupice also offers a little bit of the unusual in that this variety is potato leafed, which is quite unusual for a variety that sets fruit of the smaller size.
